Puey Inter-Cultural Forum PDF Print E-mail

The Puey Intercultural Forum is a small seminar hall located in Wat Pathumkongka, in the Chinatown area of Bangkok. It was officially opened on 28 July 2001, the second anniversary of the death of Dr Puey Ungphakorn, the great Thai economist and leader of the Santi Pracha Dhamma movement. Dr Puey was ordained as a novice at this temple when he was young and his ashes are now enshrined there.

It is a venue for alternative education in all disciplines and is open to everyone. It provides the opportunity for people to discuss alternative and thought provoking ideas. The forum is host to regular talks, discussions and performances. Recent events have included talks about Friends of Tibet in India, the activities of Ajaan Sulak's generation and the activism that led to the 14 October 1973 coup d'etat, the Yadana pipeline, Buddhist economics and GMOs.

Sulak Sivaraksa initiated the project as part of his vision to restore temples to being the centre of religious, educational and cultural life in Thai society. These days shopping centres and department stores have become the "modern temples" of Bangkok. The Puey Forum will provide an alternative and antidote to these "modern temples".

The Puey Forum draws its inspiration from Paritat Sevana (the group on reviewing society) which was also launched by Sulak Sivaraksa in the 1960s. Ajaan Puey was one of the speakers at the Paritat Sevana. Progressive minded students and intellectuals at this time suffered from political suppression under the military regimes so the Paritat Sevana served as an forum for their ideas. Some credit the subsequent activism among students that lead to the fall of Thanom's military government to the platform for ideas that was given by the Paritat Sevana.

There are also plans to open the Buddhadasa library at the same venue. Buddhadasa Bhikkhu was a monk at this temple before he established Suan Mokkh (The Garden of Liberation) in Southern Thailand. Ajaan Buddhadasa and Ajaan Puey have both served as guiding stars in Thai society, leading the religious and secular worlds respectively. The Puey Forum is a wonderful tribute to Ajaan Puey and the ideals of santi pracha dhamma (peace, public participation, righteousness) that he selflessly promoted.
