In 1963, the idiosyncratic conservative-monarchist intellectual Sulak Siwarak established, with the help of the Asia Foundation, a new journal somewhat misleadingly nameed Sangkhomsat Parithat (Social Science Review). In spite of his excellent American connections, Sulak maintained a pointedly critical stance vis-à-vis the Americanophilia and “developmentalism” of the Sarit era.  Although his insistence on trying to repopularize traditional upper-class Thai costume, and to revive “Siam” in place of the Plaek-period mongrelization “Thailand,” earned him riducule in some quarters, the thrust of many of his articles—a defense of Thai cultural and political autonomy from excessive American influence—won him a small, but increasingly influential youthful intellectual following.
