Alternative Politics for Asia (APA), a project whose mission is to create an alternative political movement in Asia that uses traditional wisdom and spiritual values to address structural, political, and grassroots issues.
In Southeast Asia many people are becoming more and more aware that economic growth is not sustainable and has damaging effects on society and the environment. Since the fall of the communist-socialist systems, progressive activists all over Asia have been looking for a holistic and sustainable strategy for achieving a better society. The APA was developed as a way to bring progressive leaders, activists, NGO workers, and academics together with the local people to discuss an alternative political movement based on a 'Spiritual Green Agenda'.
The APA is based upon the belief that development cannot be sustainable without the change of basic world view and value system that support the present power structures. We also belief that a new desirable social structure need to be based upon Asian cultural values stead of the Eurocentric way of thinking. The APA program thus consists of regional seminars and symposiums in which people from various levels of society can come together to discuss an agenda of alternative politics and structural change for Asia.
In the last few years we have held a series of in-depth dialogues between prominent Asian thinkers, social activists, NGO workers, progressive academics, and others about Alternative Politics in Asia. A book of these interview will be publish in 2001.
A prominent achievement was a Buddhist-Muslim Dialogue between Sulak Sivaraksa and Chandra Muzzafar, a report of this is printed in a book called 'Alternative Politics for Asia: a Buddhist Muslim Dialogue'.
Another exciting venture of this project is the Asian - European Dialogue on Alternative Politics organised in Ayuthaya in May 2000. Out of that seminar a book was published called 'Social Justice, Democracy and Alternative Politics: An Asian-European Dialogue'
