Eco-leadership Training By Jane Hara
Jan 15 to Jan 28 2007,
Wongsanit Ashram,
Ongkharak, Nakorn Nayok, Thailand

‘For me Leaders are those people who can continue to think well in challenging circumstances. I believe that leadership is not just about being in charge but also using effective tools for thinking and acting. Permaculture design, designing productive meetings and events and deep ecology have all increased my ability to think positively and productively about current world problems such as climate change and pollution. Permaculture design offers frameworks and methods that can be used to design our own lives and the projects we work on enabling us to assume a leadership role in places where we may have felt helpless to effect change.
As well as using permaculture principles to develop land based projects I found it really helpful and productive to apply them to meetings, events and work projects. Using these tools enables many people to take leadership roles in group situations. The damaging effect of our negative feelings about our environment can lead us to believe that we cannot act to change it. Deep ecology work turns this around enabling us to feel empowered to act in a positive and functional way – in other words to take leadership.’ (Jane Hera)
These workshop are good for facilitators, teachers, administrator, coordinators, community leaders, community organizers---participants can join one, two, three or all the 4 modules but should arrive the evening before each module start.

Jane is an experienced trainer in many areas:
• Permaculture
• Personal mentoring
• Assisting groups to bringing ecological principles into different aspects of social action e.g. management, campaigns, cooperative housing etc.
• Co-counselling
• Deep ecology (trained with Joanna Macy)
The course will consist of the following modules:
1. Introduction to Permaculture : This module will look at the ethics, attitudes and principles of Permaculture Design.
The ethics of permaculture is:
Earthcare - caring for all living and non-living things such as animals, plants, water, land and air.
Peoplecare – providing for people’s basic needs and promoting self reliance and responsibility;
Fairshares – distribution of surplus labour, information, resources, money and skills to achieve earthcare and peoplecare.
Permaculture attitudes include work with nature not against and the problem is the solution. During this module we will look at our own lives and projects to see where we are already living with permaculture ethics and attitudes and where we propose change
2. Practical Permaculture: using real work projects around Wongsanit Ashram the group will put into practice the permaculture approach. The mornings will be spent in practical work and the afternoons will look at how we have applied the permaculture thinking to what we are doing.
3. Designing productive meetings & events: This module will look at methods for increasing participation and enjoyment in all kinds of meetings and work projects. Participants will gain tools to ensure equitable, thoughtful and efficient participation in meetings and projects whilst enhancing group ownership of progress and techniques to enable people to inspire rather than drain each other. Techniques learned will include mind mapping, constructing open and visible agendas, effective and open group discussion, vision support groups etc.
4. Deep Ecology: This work is about healing our society and planet as well as our own psyches. We are living in desperate times ecologically and socially and it is hard to go anywhere without seeing the wounding of our world. Clear waters and fresh air can no longer be taken for granted, Forests are fast disappearing and climate change is causing flooding and other extreme weather conditions. The gaps between the rich and poor are widening and even people in remote places are being seduced by the lures of consumerism. Using the work of Deep Ecologists John Seed & Joanna Macy we will engage in activities and processes designed to connect us with our feelings about the ecological state of the planet enabling us to transform these feelings into seeds for positive action.
