100 Year Pridi Bonomyong
Being the mastermind of the 1932 transformation of the Thai political system
to constitutional monarchy Pridi Banomyong is called the Father of Thai Democracy.
Moreover, he led the Free Thai Movement against the Japanese occupation during
the Second World War and deeply care for social justice for Thai people. His
far sighted vision was way beyond his contemporaries, but his name and integrity
have been severely undermined and intentionally ignored by the right wing
reactionaries that have dominated Thai politics more or less since the Second
World War. The successful uprising against the last military dictator in 1992
and the new constitution of 1997 marked new milestones of Thai democracy. Sulak and friends think it is time to be honest
to the truth of our political history hence this project to celebrate Pridi's
century in 2000. This is a successful but very controversial project in contemporary
Thai politics.
