Grassroots Leadership Training Programme
GLT South East Asia
This project seeks to bring together community leaders from neighbouring Asian
countries to discuss current social problems and to empower them to develop
sustainable solutions at a grassroots level. In the long run we also hope
to influence the decision-makers at the policy level both nationally and regionally.
Some of the objectives of GLT South East Asia are:
- To develop a vision for a sustainable future which includes ecology, gender,
social justice, democracy, and spiritual values.
Discussions are held concerning gender issues and the sex industry, the
plight of the poor in big cities, and HIV/AIDS prevention, among other
things.
- To engage in a discussion about the negative impacts of consumerism, modernisation,
and globalization.
Issues of environmental and social destruction are raised and concepts
of 'deep ecology' are taught. Communities involved in alternative education
and sustainable development serve as case-studies. Organic agricultural
practices are discussed.
- To provide the skills and knowledge necessary for NGO work: needs assessment,
project planning and proposal writing, financial management, and human
resource management.
